Elderly Independence

Today, the elderly are faced with health problems that require specialized medical care or in-home assistance, both of which tend to be quite expensive. With the rising prices in living and health insurance, it is often difficult for an older individual to afford the health care they need. Some individuals are forced to pay for a medical necessity out of their pocket which places a financial burden upon a senior on a fixed income, and their family. The inability of a senior to be self sufficient can be frustrating and often leads to depression.  Change a Life Foundation realizes the financial challenges that the elderly face, and works together with 12 non profit organizations throughout Southern California to be sure that the elderly are receiving the medical attention they need and deserve.

In 2006, the Foundation assisted the elderly in a myriad of ways. Over 1,800 low-income seniors were assisted in obtaining access to safe, affordable housing. The ability to move freely, at one’s own will, is often lost for those who are older. The Foundation realizes how constraining immobility can be, and was able to provide many grants to individuals in need of scooters, wheelchairs, ramps, lift chairs, safety equipment, and vehicle lifts. Several seniors were provided with funds needed for home improvements that will allow them to continue to live independently in their own homes: improvements such as a walk-in shower, a wheelchair shower, roof and floor repairs, or an air conditioning unit.  Many other Change a Life recipients were given at-home modifications conducive to wheelchair access. In one assisted-senior day care center for 40 elderly individuals with dementia, a hydraulic lift was installed so that these residents were able to be cared for more easily at the center.  These were just some of the ways that the Foundation was able to assist the elderly. In 2006 alone, $306,791 was granted to 4,957 elderly individuals who were in need of assistance.
